The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program cultivates a diverse multidisciplinary community of emerging leaders from around the world and guides them to collaborate, innovate, and communicate as they prepare to address the complex challenges facing society. Knight-Hennessy Scholars benefit from an experiential leadership development platform, become part of a supportive community of fellow scholars, and receive funding for graduate study at Stanford. The program focuses on broadening knowledge, developing skills, and strengthening character through the King Global Leadership Program, which provides a collection of community experiences, workshops, meetings with leaders, domestic and global study trips, and personal development opportunities.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program seeks a Director of Admission to lead the Admission team to attract, recruit, select, and enroll a high-potential cohort of graduate students each year. Reporting to Knight-Hennessy Scholars co-founder and Shriram Family Director John Hennessy, the Director of Admission should evince a passion for graduate education and leadership development within a leading research university. Experience leading and managing a team, as well as familiarity with highly selective admission processes, is a plus. Domestic and international travel is required.

The program has grown from an idea into one of the world’s leading graduate communities and leadership programs; last year, we received more than 6,100 applicants for the cohort of 76 scholars. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, a creative problem-solver, a conscientious colleague, and an enthusiastic team player with a depth of knowledge in assessment, student experience, and team management. You will exhibit intellectual curiosity, solid judgment, an innovative spirit, technical expertise, and a commitment to managing both complex and simple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment.
Your primary responsibilities include:
• Providing coaching and mentoring, managing performance, determining staffing needs, developing and ensuring succession planning within the area of responsibility.
• Developing, implementing, and continually assessing the policies and practices for selecting cohorts of Knight-Hennessy Scholars
• Representing the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program to various groups within Stanford University (faculty, department administrators, etc.)
• Sharing the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and Stanford University with various constituents (prospective applicants, alumni, university administrators) throughout the US and around the world, including, designing and leading online, off-campus, and on-campus information sessions
• Participating in the Knight Hennessy Scholars program’s internal academic, administrative, and financial policy development
• Working independently to make decisions regarding projects, programs, and initiatives
• Managing, interpreting, implementing, and ensuring compliance with legal, financial, university, academic, and administrative policies and external regulations
• Defining and revising the criteria for selection, in conjunction with leadership team
• Evaluating, engaging in consultative reviews, and rendering decisions on applications
• Other duties may also be assigned
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
• Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
• Strong leadership and strategic management skills
• Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information with good judgment
• Experience managing people
• Creativity in marketing and communication
• Ability to establish credibility and effective working relationships across the university
• Advanced communication (oral and written) and presentation skills to convey information to diverse audiences
• Ability to collaborate with peers and lead cross-functional groups toward a shared goal.
• Adaptability to new information, changing conditions, or revised priorities
• Appreciation for cross-cultural competencies
• Comfort with data analysis
In addition, preferred requirements include:
An advanced degree; terminal degree strongly preferred
Physical requirements include:
• Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks
• Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
* Please note this position will require occasional work on evenings and weekends and up to 25% travel.
